Eastern Mediterranean University Center for Women’s Studies (EMU – CWS) participated in a workshop entitled “Universities with Communal Gender Equality Awareness”, an event organised by Hacettepe University Women’s Research and Implementation Center (HUWRIC).Representatives of a considerable number of state and foundation universities throughout Turkey and EMU-CWS chair Assoc. Prof. Dr. Süheyla Üçışık Erbilen and executive board member Assist. Prof. Dr. Nazime Beysan participated in the one-day workshop. During the said workshop, prospective activities and projects based on the outcomes of research on gender studies carried out by Women’s Reserch Centers in universities were discussed.Among other important topics discussed and highlighted during the workshop were the integration of “Communal Gender Equality Course” to the university curricula in all departments, organisation of seminars for academic and administrative staff members, and observation of communal gender equaity in decisions taken, appointments made and academic promotions.During the said event, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Erbilen and Assist. Prof. Dr. Beysan stated that in EMU a course on communal gender equality is offered to students every semesters and that they have plans of increasing the momentum of relevant activities on gender equality within the university. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Erbilen and Assist. Prof. Dr. Beysan also expressed their belief that Eastern Mediterranean University’s attitute towards communal gender equality will set samples for other institutions.
